My journey to become a Dental Hygienist
Hello, my name is Gaea. My interest began about 12 years ago when I was getting my routine cleaning at my family dental office. The hygienist had asked me what I was studying in college and at that time I was in my first semester in college. I was taking my general education courses and was unsure of my major. The hygienist told me about dental hygiene and I immediately was infected with her passion. So, I inquired about the dental assisting program in my neighborhood. I was soon enrolled as a dental assistant student. I remember being so fascinated by teeth and the oral cavity. Once I graduated I started working full-time as a Registered Dental Assistant in a general dental office in San Jose, CA.
My quest to become a dental hygienist was just beginning. I took classes at Foothill College part-time after work. My knowledge of the human body and the way we work was ever expanding. I then had an interest to evolve my dental experiences, so I began working in a Periodontal office. I was assisting chairside in all things periodontically involved (pocket reduction surgery, gingival tissue grafting, implants, etc). My favorite thing about periodontics is it is the "bread and butter" of our field. I was able to aid in oral hygiene instructions, assist in deep cleanings, and see the patient through to stabilize/arrest their disease.
During this term of my dental hygiene education I will be constructing additional pages for some courses I am taking. I will post pages for my Special Needs class regarding special needs patients and specific conditions/diseases. I will also be posting pages on periodontal disease from my Periodontics course. Stay tuned and I hope you enjoy...
